These include Babylon 5, Seaquest, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, NASA, Max Headroom, Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. LightWave 3D Version 8 makes a great impression right out of the box. The Amiga versions of Lightware were famously used to create the special effects in many well known TV series and Films. Since version 5 development has continued on the PC and Mac, and is still going strong, current up to version 9.3 on the PC, and Lightware is used extensively by 3D professionals in Film, TV and music videos. This version was also released for SGI, DEC Alpha, and the Macintosh. This was to be the final version on the Amiga. Later the same year in 1995 version 5 was released. This was to cater for all of the users who wished to use the software, but couldn't use the VideoToaster hardware for various reasons such as not being in a country that used the NTSC TV system.ĭue to this Lightwave's next version, version 3.5, was a proper standalone version, released in 1994.Ī year later version 4 was released, and this was also the first version to be ported to the Windows and DEC Alpha platforms. The LightRAVE dongle basically tricked the software into thinking the VideoToaster hardware was present. At this point a small company called Might and Logic developed a hardware dongle called LightRAVE, which allowed people to run Lightwave without the Video Toaster hardware. A year later in 1993 version 3 was released. The first version was released in 1990, and the next version 2 was released in 1992 alongside a new upgraded Videotoaster hardware release. Lightwave was also one of the first 3D packages to feature a built-in radiosity render engine.Īs the Newktek Videotoaster hardware was developed and improved, so was Lightware. The 3D modeling component supports both polygon modeling and subdivision surfaces. It includes a rendering engine that supports such advanced features as realistic reflection and refraction, radiosity, and caustics. In the case of the initial versions this meant being able to utilise the Amiga's own CPU, along with the processing of the Newtek VIdeotoaster hardware. NewTek LightWave 3D is a software package used for rendering 3D images, both animated and static. Most of the functions within Lightwave are multi-threaded, meaning it can utilise multiple processors to perform complex calculations. It utilised the processing power of the Videotoaster hardware to manipulate the 3D objects during construction, and with the final raytrace rendering. The Lightwave 3D application started out as part of the software included with the Newtek Videotoaster hardware a powerful video editing and post production Zorro based hardware solution. The merging of these two programs explains why Lightware has two distinct parts to it, the modeler and the scene animator. Videoscape was written by Allen Hastings and Modeler 3D by Stuart Ferguson. What eventually became Lightwave started life as two different programs for the Amiga, called Videoscape 3D and Aegis Modeler 3D. i just enjoy my old-skool software that's warm and fuzzy to my heart. In 1988 Newtek were looking for a 3D application to include with their new VideoToaster video processing hardware for the Amiga. is nice to use a familiar app with no pressure to upgrade. So, i'm happy in my retro LW verse stable, and perpetual. my impression is that they did not want to deal with anything below v2020, and i got the brush-off. i declined their terms, and actually went back to v2015.3 & 11.6.3 permanently. basically, newtek/vizrt wanted $1000+ for v2019, including a v2020 purchase i didn't want. I would have had to pay full upgrade price ($595) for 2020, then buy an additional "downgrade" at full upgrade price for 2019, just to get 2019. If the user already has a dongle when upgrading to LightWave 11.0.3+, that user may choose to run LightWave from the dongle or from the software license. ![]() LightWave 11.0.3+ can still use a hardware dongle, but it does not require a dongle. These versions can run on a software-based license. i couldn't even purchase v2019 (i found too many bugs in the trial version of 2020, and wanted to upgrade my v2018 license to 2019 a cpl years ago, and skip out on 2020) - no dice. LightWave versions 11.0.3 and higher do not need a dongle. if you had a dongle for v9.6, then your problem is that you are missing the dongle and cannot activate without it, or your usb dongle is broken and unreadable (usb devices DO break after a time).Īnd if you want support for such an old version from newtek and/or vizrt, don't hold your breath. i recently installed LW 11.6.3 on a workstation after not using it for many, many years. LW licenses are perpetual, and only one key is tied to a purchased version.
